Bluebird on my shoulder

First thing this morning, lollygagging in my bed, I read a Kurt Vonnegut quote on @etst instagram. She is a mom and a writer and her middle child has Down Syndrome. Kelle Hampton @etst revels in delight of her children and summer- so you know I love her feed.

The arts are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”

Kurt Vonnegut

I read this and felt a blip of inspiration and then the doubt. The little devil on my shoulder said “You don’t have time. Focus on getting Dolly ready for camp and didn’t you say you were going to bathe the dogs.”

Well guess what. Dolly is my little organized wonder and we conquered Target, Goodwill, Joann’s, Pet store, Taqueria del Sol, and Frida and Linus are bathed! We purchased the perfect shower caddy, thrifted overalls, flea medicine, and patches. And had time for queso.

I think the water from the hose somehow made these magic rainbows?

Last week Dolly had prepped her fanny pack with some of her patches and I was inspired and tonight I stitched and ironed on my patches to a beloved dress with a few tiny grease stains. The hardest part was threading the needle- and yes- I have on my granny glasses. When I was a little girl my mom burnt a hole in her nice khackis with her Now cigarettes. She sewed a little honey bee over the hole and I knew she was a genius and stylish.

I’m missing my Gidge. It is his birthday and we celebrated yesterday. He left last night for the mountains and hiking to waterfalls with friends. He is 17 today. I’m so lucky he is mine. A lump in my throat. So lucky. He drew me a chalk picture of an otter before he left. He always makes sure I know I am loved.

Years ago, we had decided that if I returned as an animal, it would be a mama otter.

Well, it is hard to follow that with anything.

But, my point in this post was to shamelessly promote my wonderful patch skills. My dress with the grease stain, no longer has a grease stain. Voila!

Mim is at my sister’s house for cousin camp. Tomorrow we will be reunited. So strange to have Dolly and I be the only ones home. Addy is in Gulf Shores on vacation with Ficken. Tuck still lives in Santa Cruz. BeBe is in Hilton Head working for the summer. Gidge is in the mountains. Sunday, I take Dolly to camp for three weeks. And Mim has spent 5 days in North Carolina with my sister. Yesterday, I thought they would always come in the bathroom while I peed.

No more blinking.

Good night. Sleep tight and Don’t let the bed bugs bite.
